For me, Tango is about the connection between two people, listening, responding and adapting to each other. That’s what drew me to tango, what I look for in each dance and what I try to nurture in my students.

Imagine the following…
You put on your heels and try a few steps, stretch a little bit and try a few ochos. Frustrated by the lack of balance and pains in your toes that seem never to get any better no matter how much you practice or how many classes you take, you stare longingly across the milonga at a dancer producing the most beautiful boleos you have ever seen. I wish I could dance like her, you think. ‘You can’ a tiny voice says. Tears prick the back of your eyes and you stare down at the floor to blink them away. ’I sa-aid, you can’. This time the voice is accompanied by a sharp pain in your foot and looking down you realize there is a small creature sitting on the top of your shoe, jabbing at you with a tiny stick. You blink, maybe your contact lenses are playing tricks on you? ‘Pick me up and let’s get out of here’ the voice demands. You pick the creature up and immediately find yourself being led outside and up some stairs at the back of the building, to an area you never knew existed and to what looks like another milonga.

The best and worst things we can say to our partners
When I first started writing this piece I imagined that it would be short and vaguely amusing; it would touch upon some of the misplaced yet well intentioned compliments leaders and followers often receive and point a few of us in the right direction.
